Adobe Photoshop AI: Generative Fill explained

For this demonstration we’ll be using a couple of different photographs, both taken recently with an iPhone and not previously edited in any way. You might be more familiar with AI’s ability to write like a human with applications like ChatGPT. But artificial intelligence can also be used for creating and editing images.

At least in EU suggestions are that it should be possible to identify when AI has been used. It’s not only in photojournalism that there are restrictions about manipulated images. We will probably see it in almost any photographic contest, thanks to AI. Loving all the whining about how this is the “death of photography” and all that ridiculous drama. The photo of the van has the windshield reflection of snowless trees, so even though the useless AI changes the background, the end result is a lie.

Am I impressed by Photoshop’s AI Generative Fill and Generative Expand?

Family moments are precious and sometimes you want to capture that time spent with loved ones or friends in better quality than your phone can manage. We’ve selected a group of cameras that are easy to keep with you, and that can adapt to take photos wherever and whenever something memorable happens. Well, humans can do it artistically but I still find it amazing. Instead, I will wait until free tools such as stable diffusion get more refined and modifed in order be applicable to photographs in a similar way (and quality) as Adobe’s generativ fill function.

Through this tutorial we’ll show various examples to demonstrate the power of generative fill. Whether it’s removing a subject from the background or adding new elements to a scene, this tool does it all. And the best part is, it’s available right now in the Photoshop beta release and will soon be rolled out to all Photoshop builds. Generative fill utilizes artificial intelligence to fill in gaps in your images and even generate new content from scratch.

Combining Images With Generative Fill

Then we’ll import the first image into your canvas by clicking the import button on the contextual taskbar. In addition to extending the image area of your canvas, you can use generative fill to replace backgrounds in your images. For this step, we’ll eliminate the background of our car image and replace it with a depiction of the salt flats in Utah. We can use the select subject button for our image, but other selection tools may produce a better result depending on the image you decide to use.

For the purposes of this article, we won’t be diving too deep into the subtle science and exact art of potion-making prompting. Type your prompt into the text box pop-up, then press generate. From here you should be able to control everything in the properties panel. Importantly, you can also report images that show off lude or offensive subject matter.

Photoshop generative fill is a new AI-powered image generator. It arrived as part of the Adobe Firefly collection – a new family of innovative generative AI models that can create both text and image effects. It is really easy to use Photoshop’s AI Generative Fill features. Once you have Photoshop Beta installed, you just need to highlight the area you want to edit. Then, enter a quick prompt of the image you want and Photoshop AI will do the rest. We extended the generation frame out a couple of times, making sure there was good overlap so that DALL-E could make use of the pixels.

You can download the regular version of Photoshop, but for Generative Fill you’ll need the beta. Click on ‘Beta apps’ on the left-hand side, then find Photoshop (beta) and click ‘Install’.
